Better gardens start with biochar.

You may not be a master gardener, but you know a better garden starts with better soil. If you’re getting less-than-desired results with your lawn and garden, try mixing in biochar! Wakefield Biochar is an all-natural, certified organic soil conditioner that improves the health of any soil.

Also try our Premium Compost and our Compost+Biochar blend.

What is biochar?

Wakefield’s OMRI-listed biochar is a premium soil conditioner made by heating natural wood scraps (pyrolysis). When wood decomposes, it releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Our process captures the carbon (carbon sequestration) to create an organic soil conditioner that improves the health of any soil.

Biochar helps your soil retain more water and increases microbial activity, so your soil has more nutrients. That means you can grow healthier plants with less work — and you can help reduce harmful greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

Backyard Results
After 1 Week

A few weeks after a new puppy, the grass was suffering. Following the instructions for lawn patch repair, the lawn looked great just 1 week after using Wakefield Compost + Biochar blend.

Soccer Field:
1 Year Later

This green rectangle is an aerial view of a soccer field in a municipal park! We used Wakefield Compost + Biochar with Mycorrhizal Fungi to improve the health of the soil, enabling the grass to thrive.

Pea Plants
After 2 Weeks

We seeded pea plants in glass containers so we could watch the root systems develop —with the only difference being the addition of Wakefield Biochar to the soil mix. The effect was dramatic!

For every pound of biochar, about 2 pounds of CO2 are removed from the atmosphere.
