What Is Soil Conditioner?

Soil conditioners are materials that provide nutrients, improve water retention, and boost air circulation for better quality soil.

The condition of your soil plays a crucial role in the vitality of your landscape. When soil quality is low and the ground lacks the essential nutrients needed for plants to thrive, your landscaping efforts may be frustratingly unsuccessful.

That’s why you may need to improve soil health first so that you can enjoy the thriving, vibrant backyard of your dreams. Here at Wakefield BioChar, our soil conditioners infuse the ground with the essential nutrients your plants and lawns crave. Our products can also enhance the condition of the soil, which ensures steady and abundant plant growth.

What Are Soil Conditioners?

Soil conditioners can be made from all sorts of materials. Inorganic conditioners typically consist of materials like limestone, clay, and sand. There are also organic conditioners, which can use peat moss, compost, manure, and pine bark to boost soil quality.

Wakefield BioChar creates our soil conditioning products with wood waste, which is subject to a special treatment that enhances the inherent carbon content. Carbon is an essential aspect of healthy soil, as it simultaneously provides nutrients while also improving structure.

Despite these benefits, our biochar products do not introduce potentially harmful components to the environment, which is a concern with other landscaping products.

How Does Soil Conditioner Work?

Soil conditioners provide a number of positive effects to help establish a more fertile landscape. They ensure minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium are abundant by improving the soil’s ability to retain these and other nutrients.

Conditioners also have a positive impact on the structure of soil, which results in greater oxygen flow and enhanced water retention. Water retention is particularly important in dense soils or soils where water drains too quickly.

When using our biochar products, we recommend “charging” the material first to ensure immediate results. To charge biochar, simply combine it with another organic material, such as topsoil or compost. We also recommend infusing the mixture with enough water to keep it moist, but not saturated.

While charging will speed up the results, remember that our products are still effective without it. The charging process will happen over time once the soil conditioner has been added to your landscape.

How Can Soil Conditioner Benefit Your Landscape?

People often use fertilizer products to enhance their landscapes. While these products can be effective, they have a negative impact on the surrounding environment. For instance, a large portion of fertilizer ends up in nearby bodies of water, which can have a poor impact on human and animal life.

Fertilizers also facilitate the release of greenhouse gases into the environment, which contributes to already devastating climate change.

Organic soil amendments like biochar do not cause the same negative effects. Biochar actually improves carbon sequestration in the environment, which means that stable carbon will remain in the ground, as opposed to being released into the atmosphere. As a result, it benefits your landscape and the environment.

Soil conditioners also offer numerous other benefits, including:

  • Reduces Water Needs – When soil structure is improved, you may be able to use less water to keep plants and grass fertile. That’s because of the effect conditioners have on water retention, which means moisture will remain in the soil for a longer period.
  • Boosts Health of Plants – Not every homeowner is lucky enough to live in an area with high-quality soil. Soil amendments improve the overall condition of the soil to support healthy plant life, no matter the quality of the underlying soil.

Our products are also OMRI listed, which means they are fully certified as organic. They are also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which illustrates our commitment to sustainable forestry practices.

If you’re unhappy with the quality of your landscape, biochar applications are just the solution you’re looking for. With products from Wakefield BioChar, you will enjoy amazing results with the confidence of knowing you’re doing your part to ensure environmental preservation.
