Biochar for a Better World

Biochar is an active tool in the fight against climate change. Even when you struggle to see the global change in our atmosphere, you will certainly witness improvements in your own garden, lawn, and flowerbed. Every little bit of help counts!

How does Biochar help the earth?

Found in the Amazon, terra preta (“black soil” in Portuguese) is a blend of high-carbon material, agricultural residues, animal and fish bones, and broken pottery (clay). Terra preta was known to generate higher yields of crops to feed ancient native peoples.

Today, we understand this “black soil” to be the high-carbon material that’s made by burning biomass (renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals). This “black soil” is Biochar, which still gets higher yields of plant life in our time.

To Put It Simply

The ability to take biomass and convert it into carbon material through pyrolysis and put it back in the soil is called carbon sequestration.

Biomass waste, like waste wood from paper mills, is typically left to decompose naturally and creates greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. But Wakefield takes the waste and converts it to biochar, a stable carbon. Adding biochar to your soil helps your garden grow — and prevents greenhouse gases. So… your backyard garden is a step you can take to help reduce climate change and create a Better World!

Why You Should Use Biochar

When you use Wakefield Biochar soil conditioners in your backyard, you’re putting carbon back into the earth, making it easier for plant life to thrive.

Your lawn, flowers, and gardens will be so grateful you provided them with soil that will give them nourishment!

Biochar lasts for years – making it easily sustainable. Biochar is also completely organic, no chemicals to be found here!
